What type of deck materials do you build with?
The most popular material used in our construction is a “composite” or PVC deck board. These are low maintenance board selections in that they require little in terms of traditional care (ie. sanding and staining). Following these selections in popularity are pressure treated wood and cedar wood. These generally require more maintenance but offer an excellent value. FSBD is also experienced in working with exotic lumbers. We have built decks using Cumaru, Jatoba, Tigerwood, and IPE. We recently completed our largest project to date using 2,800sqft of IPE.
What type of railings do you use?
We use a variety of railings to suit the needs of each customer. Deck railings give each deck a different design aesthetic. We offer the following rail systems.
- Composite railings: Choose from (4) different profiles in (6) different colors.
- Aluminum rail systems: A large selection of baluster (spindle) designs.
- Cable Rail systems.
- Glass panel systems.
- Vinyl railings: Choose from (3) different profiles in (3) different colors (Khaki, tan, white)
Will you help with the design of the project?
We understand that not everyone can visualize a project before it starts to take shape. On our initial visit, we are able to provide hand drawn sketches to provide you with a rough 2-D look at the layout, foot print and to insure our dimensions are correct. At that time we also will recommend alternate design options that may be incorporated into your project. Afterwhich, FSBD will produce a 3-D rendering to help you visualize the final product. This often helps our clients see how the deck will complement your existing home.
Do I need a permit for my project?
Yes! All new deck builds or tear down and re-builds will require a building permit. We will handle the permit process for you. FSBD will prepare and submit the structural drawings that your township will require for the building permit. The only thing we will require from you is the survey (plot plan) of your property, which is required for the zoning portion of the permit. If you have an HOA that requires approval before construction, we will also provide you with all of the necessary drawings and 3-D renderings, along with a list of materials and colors to be used on your project for you to submit your request. This usually speeds up your HOA approval process. We typically do NOT get involved directly with HOA associations.
Who will be my point of contact when our project build begins?
At First State Building you will always work directly with the estimator that you encountered at your initial consultation. We believe that our professionals should take ownership of a project from beginning to end. We also believe that this helps eliminate confusion and miscommunications that can often sour a construction project. All of our estimators have construction experience (actually building decks in the field!) at one point in their career and understand the building principles and required to successfully complete each project. They will be on site each day to answer questions and address any concerns you may have throughout the construction process.
Why should I choose First State Building?
FSBD professionals have over 75 combined years of hands on deck building experience and have encountered most issues that arise over the course of a backyard project. We are able to proactively address these issues, quickly respond to new ones that arise and can provide the best solutions to unique concerns. Additionally, we like to ensure that our customers is informed, providing detailed information on each phase of their project to insuring you know exactly what you are getting before contracting with us. Lastly, we pride ourselves on maintaining excellent communication with our customers. You will be kept you up-to-date on the status of your project!
Basic Cleaning Recommendations for PVC & Composite Decks
With your new “low maintenance” PVC or composite deck, it is acceptable to use a pressure washer for cleaning. Be sure to use a low pressure (under 1500 PSI) pressure washer with a wide angle (no less than 30 degree) tip. Using a pressure washer over 1500 PSI or one with less than a 30 degree angle increases the risk of cutting into the deck board. Remember to always spray at a slight angle and not straight down at your decking. We recommend having a pressure washer that allows you to add soap or other detergents to wash your deck. Upon completion of your deck build, FSBD will use soap and water to pressure wash your deck. It’s suggested that power washing your deck (2) times a year is best. A good rule of thumb is to pressure wash it at the end of fall before Winter sets in and once Winter breaks and spring has arrived.
Do not use rubber or plastic mats directly on the surface of your PVC/composite deck boards if they come complete with a PVC cap stock; it will lead to discoloration of the decking where the mat is placed.
AZEK, Timbertech, & Zuri decking has been tested against various household products, such as suntan lotion, BBQ sauce, coffee, ice tea, etc to ensure a spill will not discolor your deck. However, if a spill does occur, wipe it up IMMEDIATELY. If allowed to sit for an hour or more you will notice stains on your deck boards.
Painting: All PVC fascia board, risers, and stringers will accept paint. However, it is not something we perform nor recommend.
Scuff Mark Removal & General Cleaning
If you happen to scuff your new AZEK or Zuri decking and would like to remove it, we recommend using “Magic Eraser” by Mr. Clean. We have found that this has been the best method for scuff mark removal.
For general cleaning, the manufacturer recommends most cleaning supplies but we have found that the following list of cleaners work the best:
- 505 Cleaner
- Spray Nine
- Simple Green
Winter Time Snow Removal
If you need to remove snow from your deck please do so with care. You may use a shovel to remove snow from the deck but be sure to use a shovel that DOES NOT have a metal edge. We recommend a shovel that is made completely out of hard plastic.
For Ice Issues: It is acceptable to use rock salt or calcium chloride on your PVC or Composite deck board. Either material may leave behind a small amount of residue but can be easily washed off of the boards with warm water.
